Around the world in 80 Martini’s



What a great name for a film …..or indeed could this be the template for next year’s adventure (with Viv if she manages to sneak early retirement as well 🤫).

The reason I mention this beautiful drink is that after my trip to Casablanca yesterday, I took advice from the secret society that are the motorhome owners and went to a campsite they recommended just outside Marrakesh in preparation for tomorrow’s party.  Normally I wouldn’t trust a German driving a huge white Winnebago any more than I would my ‘John Thomas’ with a ginger haired maniac carrying a claymore however this time I did……

What a result, the campsite is great and did serve a great cocktail….my first bought alcohol in Morocco 😉.  This will provide me a great base to explore Marrakesh’ souks this afternoon and tomorrow before the re-run of Crecy in the evening 🤫


Back to Casablanca though, it was very much as expected as it has become the economic powerhouse of Morocco.  Whilst the medina has been preserved it is small and is nothing special compared to others I had been to and is surrounded by a large modern, industrial city.  It does have a great mosque by the sea……. And as I found out in my Marrakesh campsite later also brews a great (genuinely great), beer.



I do read the comments that some have posted on the blog and fair point I have not been practicing the banjo as much as planned so after breakfast this morning I did sit down for a couple of hours (much to the angst of the German neighbours🎶🫣).  It is coming on a little, although I may be sick of ‘She’ll be coming round the mountain’ very quickly.

For anyone who does camp, be it in white whale camper and or just in a tent, I would strongly recommend the App ‘Park4Night’, really good coverage of all Europe and beyond……and it’s free😜

On Sun I am off over the Atlas towards Taroudant in Sub-Saharan Africa……. Could be an interesting drive, much of the 200km is not on metalled roads, there is apparently still a lot of damage following last year’s earthquake and there is still snow on the ground above 1800m and the pass goes to 2300 😎

The Intended Route (Part Three - Decompression & Decontamination)

 Spain - and the Return Assuming I was not declared persona non grata on the first transit, I am intending to get back to Algeciras at the start of week 8 of my travels. I then have a week or so to get myself hosed down from the worrying image I have of the beast I may have turned into before a welcoming pint back in the Dale. After an obligatory stop in Gibralter for a decent pint (or at least a pint), t he route back through Spain will take in some of the places I have never been but have always wanted to......Grenada where I can't wait to see both the Alhambra... and the Bohemia Jazz Cafe....one of Spain's legendary traditional Jazz bars 😆 From there to Madrid, where I am meeting up with Ian Maitland (a dear knuckle-dragging mate from Leeds Beckett Uni), and his Dad (the real man of interest), in Madrid for a few wee drams and a taste of what the Capitol has to offer. Mid-century Crisis or exercising my right to say F**k IT

A great friend of mine when she heard of this trip accused me of having a mid-century crisis ..... I strongly disagreed! Over the past few years, I have felt like I was in a kind of prison, not one with barbed wire and snarling hounds but a metaphorical one where I was tied down by the responsibilities of work, generating filthy lucre (with no real aim of what to do with it); I felt trapped and it was impacting my mental health (and making me a miserable bugger at the same time).  I had huge support from colleagues at Leeds Beckett where I worked and from my family and friends and the outcome of a really difficult year was a great one, one where I saw real possibilities and where I had a much better appreciation of where we were as a family and how much we really had achieved.   This lead me to the point where I said F**K IT (the capitals are intentional), I took the opportunity to retire early from the University started working in charcuterie with Chris W...
